MINDAKA

“Every photograph tells a story.”

Wildlife photography, for me, is not simply about taking a photograph of an animal.
It’s about patience.
It’s about understanding behaviour.
It’s about waiting for that one moment when everything comes together.
From the quiet movement of a leopard through the forest to a bird appearing for only a few seconds, every encounter is different.
Through my photography, I try to capture wildlife as naturally as possible — without disturbing the moment or changing the story.

Leopard Collection

200+ LEOPARDS. ONE JOURNEY. YEARS IN THE WILD.

Since 2016, I have spent countless days travelling through the forests of Sri Lanka — Wilpattu, Yala, Kumana and even the misty highlands of Horton Plains — with one simple goal: to photograph and document individual Sri Lankan leopards.

Today, that journey has reached a milestone: 200+ individually identified leopards.

But these 200+ are not simply 200+ photographs. Each leopard has a face, a story, a place, and a history.

The spots on a leopard’s face are remarkably individual, allowing me to recognize and distinguish one leopard from another. Over the years, I have carefully photographed these faces, compared patterns, revisited old images, recorded first sightings, and built a personal photographic catalogue of the individuals I have encountered.

Behind every photograph are hours of waiting. Long drives into the parks. Early mornings. Endless hours under the sun. rain, dust, exhaustion and sometimes entire days without seeing a leopard. And then, sometimes after all that waiting, a leopard appears for only a few seconds — and you have to be ready.

Some individuals were photographed only once. Others were encountered again years later. Some were familiar faces from the past, while others were completely new individuals. Every sighting added another small piece to a much bigger story.

This collection is therefore more than a gallery to me. It is a record of encounters accumulated over nearly a decade — a personal attempt to document the individuality of one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic animals.

And the journey is far from over.

I hope this collection will not only preserve memories of the leopards I have been fortunate enough to meet, but also encourage a deeper appreciation for the individuality, beauty and importance of the Sri Lankan leopard.
